Meet Hexie Swapper Emily P. of WI

"I'm working on several different hexie projects, but I choose this one, because its extra special. I started this quilt back in Oct. 2013 as a Christmas gift for a good friend named Ashley.

This quilt is named Tenney's Snowflake. This past November marked a year that Ashley and her husband lost their little boy Tenney to cancer. He was an amazing little boy (who I had the privilege to know and watch a time or two) who LOVED snowflakes, and favorite color was red. I saw the red snowflake fabric and knew I wanted to make a hexie snowflake for Ashley. I didn't quite finish it in time for Christmas, but I'm almost done!! Maybe Christmas in July?! ;-)

Meet Hexie Swapper Melody M. of TX

 "I was introduced to hexie making a year ago from my friend Janis.  Once she showed me I was hooked!  I have been sewing since 1968. 

 I was 11 years old when I got my first sewing machine. My dad bought me a singer sewing machine that was a treadle and it had been turned into an electric machine.  I was thrilled!!!  When I would go to my grandmaws, I sewed on a treadle machine.  I started doing hand sewing and piecing in the early 70's but had never heard about paper piecing.  As I said before, I'M HOOKED.

I am currently working on a hexie grandmothers quilt.  I have collected materials from different estate sales and auctions.  I love the way it goes together.  You can see progress quickly.

My granddaughter, Alyssa 10 yrs old, has even put in a few stitches here and there.  She is very interested in sewing as I was and guess what?  She has her own machine.

Will keep everyone posted to the finished quilt and future beginnings of more to come."

Melody, it's wonderful you are getting your granddaughter involved in your project. Perhaps she will be a future swapper! :)

Meet Hexie Swapper Jennifer L. of IL

 

"I have attached a picture of my most recent hexagon project, made with 3/4" hexies.  I started the project intending it to be a floor pillow for my apartment, but eventually decided I didn't want this to be on the floor. 

 

So, I have decide to applique this onto a larger piece of solid fabric and make a quilt to hang on the wall.  I have a few flowers already pieced that didn't make it into this, so I will probably add them on to the quilt, maybe on the back.  I'm not sure yet.  I started working on it last summer during a drive out to Colorado and California from Chicago.  I competed a large portion of it during that trip.
 

Thank you for organizing the swap!  My next project will involve hexagons from the swap and I am really excited about it!"

Meet New Swapper Tracy H. of CA

Tracy H. is one of our new swappers from sunny CA. Here is a little bit about her "hexie history."

"I am a grad student, just about to finish a teacher credential program before starting my Masters in Education.

I took sewing classes from Winky Cherry (her sewing for kids books are the best!) while growing up, but never had a machine as an adult, so I stopped sewing beyond the basic mending.  When I became a preschool teacher, the director of the school was a quilter and got me interested in quilting.  I did mostly hand piecing and tied quilts when they were finished.  I bought a small "sewing genie" machine for my classroom and used it to make quilts for about 10 years before it died.

 

About five years ago I stumbled onto a blog that demonstrated how to make hexies and I thought "I can totally do that!"  I started working on a 1930's print flower garden quilt when I got engaged, and I am still working on it 4 years later!!  I currently have 3 hexie quilts going.  I love paper piecing because it is so portable.  I also love cross-stitching and other needle crafts andI teach young children sewing, embroidery and cross-stitch.

Here is a picture of a quilt that uses fabric that I bought on our honeymoon!  It is almost done- I am adding another row around the edges before sending it off to be finished!"
