Since we use 1" hexies in our swaps, we would use 2 1/4" strips. That would give you 1/4" seam allowance. If you would like more, make it a 2 1/2" strip.
You can cut up to six layers at a time in this manner and make quick work of it. Try a strip or so and adjust to your liking.
